The film is about a family and the problems they must endure and the sacrifices they must do to keep it together, the story examines the situation where a family is after losing the head of the family, and in history is very present world of marginalization embodied in bad company. This film

the Oedipal narrative scheme is felt in the relationships Silveria and his son Joe, in which the mother tries through physical needs of your child to avoid resorting to the use of heroin, from the point of view director of the film, Bernardo Bertolucci , the mother's actions are fully justifiable even though the film was banned in many countries and a few other demonized by their characteristics and incestuous connotations.
