Throughout the film shows atypical events caused by the child, while the father tries to lead a life normal as far as possible, maintaining order and trying to resolve the trauma that her daughter lives. In this context, when he discovers that Emily has been seeing a new friend, an imaginary friend named Charlie . His game favorite is "hiding", but this game is nothing innocent or childish but quite the opposite.
Emily acts in a frightening, typical of a psychopath and not a girl. Research conducted by David to find out who or what is Charlie and why does he say and do things so horrible to her daughter, will lead to a fatal outcome.
This is when it enters the argumentative scheme Oedipal: David discovers, after several nervous breakdowns, deaths and horrific scenes in their new home that the real culprit is him, the murderer of both the death his wife (which at first was due to his suicide) and others that appear in the course of the film.
Emily, terrified of revealing the secret he kept so carefully, finally reveals: Charlie, his invisible friend is the same David.
His father, beside himself, all those crimes committed by an accomplice to his daughter, which was forced to keep his secret away from David. Thus, with a personality disorder, he just discovering the whole truth when the situation may worsen.
Everything was David has lived in one form or another lie. Charlie, his "dark side" He seizes upon the guilt of sentiment and panic for all he has done and for being responsible for such tragic events.
This last feature may be an alteration of the classic story as it does not punish itself. Although, as I said, from the point of view of David, they felt guilty.
