Taking as subject of this paper the comparison of a contemporary film with classic The Odyssey, I want to present this animated feature from Hayao Miyazaki's hand.
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi or Spirited Away in English, tells the adventures of a ten year old girl who went to her new home when moving home, his father takes a wrong turn, ending up to what looks like an abandoned theme park. Separated by circumstances, Chihiro must live a series of adventures to return with their parents and return home to this strange place, home of monsters and gods.
Although probably the film's director has not expressly relied on the classic Greek, we find several parallels between the two stories. And to begin with, Ulysses is reluctant to go to war, just as Chihiro is presented as a girl upset with the change from home and therefore bound to make a trip that does not , and enters abandoned theme park, but is opposed in principle.

Following the plot of Spirited Away go mentioning the various similarities:
Once inside the abandoned park, find a food stall where parents begin to eat without thinking about the consequences. Chihiro refuses and decides to take a walk. By nightfall strangers begin to appear, and frightened child runs to his parents, finding where I had left earlier with a couple of pigs. This reminds me of the passage Circe in The Odyssey, when the witch turns the hero's companions in the same animal.
Left alone, Chihiro's adventure begins. If you want to recover to their parents and go home, you must "down into hell" , a kind of underground space, with boilers (the plot unfolds in a traditional Japanese public baths) and ask for "advice" from Kamaji who for me would be the old Tiresias.
Chihiro will also face several challenges and creatures that could be usefully compared with monsters the classic hero must overcome on their journey by sea, and speaking of the sea, our young hero must also make a trip part of their adventures across an ocean , and will not do alone, because this time citing a difference, Chihiro will collect peers during his adventures in the bathhouse.
However, the toughest challenge to be faced is the Witch Yubaba, who runs everything and is the head of the place. Its power and high position somo lady of all who live there, as well as intrusions carried out during the movie, Chihiro putting the most difficult things, remember the role of Neptune to go against Ulysses.
But just as Chihiro has its Neptune, she also has its Athena : Haku, a young god-shaped guide is devoted to providing assistance to our hero when you need it and protecting it in the most difficult for you to return home with their parents.

Finally, like Ulysses, Chihiro gets to meet them again, a fact that signifies the return to Ithaca , home.
